Course Details

Business Analysts (BAs) are emerging as a central IT competency. This course is an introduction to the key concepts and terminology of business analysis. It begins by reviewing the function of the business analyst in the modern organization as well as providing a historical perspective. Participants learn the role of the BA in the organization, the business case for best practice business analysis methodologies, why IT projects fail and how the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK) relates to the work of the BA. The role of the BA as facilitator and project steward is explained in the context of the economics and financials of a successful IT business case, contingency planning, monitoring and managing change requests, business requirements documentation and various business analysis models. The course focuses on reviewing and developing the core competencies of a business analyst and emphasis is placed on communications skills, as well as the value of modelling.

Additional topics include the project lifecycle, process modeling, flowcharting and communication.
The course follows the IIBA industry standard and includes a PDF version of the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge.

This is a fundamentals course that prepares participants for the next six courses of the UBC Certificate in Business Analysis by introducing key terminology and concepts addressed in the later more detailed courses of this program.
