Summer Institutes
DIGITAL VIDEO PRODUCTION WITH FINAL CUT STUDIO: ONE WEEK
Chris Lay
Produce a video from start to finish in this week-long, intensive video production course. Learn the fundamentals of pre-production, shooting and post-production best practices based on Final Cut Pro, the industry standard for new filmmakers, independent multimedia producers and major studios. Working in small groups, you create a production plan, script your storyline, shoot your footage and edit together a polished final project.
From pre-production to post-production, this course covers:
- two full days of video production, including planning techniques for shooting the footage you need
- proper technical setup of Final Cut Pro editing system
- hands-on work with HD format professional digital cameras
- understanding how to capture, manage and edit footage
- learning how to apply filters
- integrating multiple forms of media, including audio and Photoshop files
As a final project, you produce your own video piece for distribution through broadcast, DVD, mobile and the Web.
This course may be applied toward the UBC Certificate in Multimedia and Web Development.

MOBILE WEB DESIGN: ONE WEEK

Take your existing web design skills to a new level with this one-week intensive mobile web design program. Learn how to enhance your HTML, CSS and Photoshop skills with mobile web principles and convert existing websites into efficient, optimized mobile sites that are suited to viewing on a smartphone. Topics include how to adapt style sheets, resize graphics and condense web content for mobile viewing. Design your mobile website to look like a basice iPhone application or add some jQTouch to enhance interactivity in your site. This course combines instructor-led seminars and supervised Mac labs with a course assistant.
During the week you:
- learn best practices for developing mobile websites and requirements of the end user
- understand the limitations of smartphone screen size and learn to create efficient navigation designs
- design mobile-friendly and optimized page layouts that are effective in their overall usability
As a final proejct, you create a functional, interactive and optimized mobile website.
Prerequisites: Prior knowledge, skills and experience in building websites in HTML/CSS and basic use of Photoshop.
Requirements: Smartphone with data plan. iPhone is preferred but design specifications for other smartphones will also be covered.

WEB DESIGN: THREE-WEEK INTENSIVE
Aimee Chung, Vincent McCurley and Negin K. Etemadi
Discover interactive media and learn to create a functional website using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Dreamweaver and Adobe Flash. This three-week introductory intensive is for anyone wishing to learn how to create graphically rich websites with animation and interactivity. The final project involves creating a dynamic website. The program includes instruction, hands-on activities and supervised Mac labs. Assistance will be provided for first-time Mac users.
Learn the skills you need to build your own website:
- use Photoshop tools to create layers and adjust images and colour
- understand basic grid design principles
- use Photoshop to optimize images for the Web and integrate them into Dreamweaver or Flash
- layout web pages with Dreamweaver
- create and animate graphics with Flash
- add sound and video to your site or create a simple slideshow.
This course may be applied toward the UBC Certificate in Multimedia and Web Development.

ADOBE INDESIGN: ONE WEEK
Negin K. Etemadi
In this week-long intensive, learn the principles of print layout, create multi-page documents and design your own project. With hands-on instruction and supervised labs, discover the powerful tools of type-formatting automation including style sheets for paragraphs, characters and objects. Projects include creating a brochure and a newsletter; flowing pages together within the same document as well as moving seamlessly between pages. Photoshop and Illustrator will also be used to demonstrate how to transition images smoothly into InDesign.
This course may be applied toward the UBC Certificate in Multimedia and Web Development.

CANCELLATIONS AND WITHDRAWALS
Programs may be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment or other reasons. If this occurs, a full refund is processed and sent to you immediately.
If you wish to withdraw from a Summer Institute, please submit written notice seven business days before the course start date. A $100 administration fee is deducted from each refund; no refunds are possible after this deadline.
